Antique Camel Saddle 1800's

Description

This antique camel saddle from the 1800s is a collector 2 person or 1 person with saddle bags saddle.
Acquired years ago in Arizona, could this be one of "Hi Jolly's" Camel Corps saddles? As the story goes, when the US won the Mexican-American War in 1848, the US mounted an exploration effort to explore its new territory. To supply the expedition a "Camel Corps" was founded and Hadji Ali an Arab camel driver was hired to manage the camels. The explorers shortened his hard to pronounce name to "Hi Jolly". When the exploration efforts and the "Camel Corps" were abandoned with the outbreak of the Civil War the survey was abandoned. Some camels were sold the the circus and others were turned loose in the Arizona desert where the last desert camel died in 1947.
52" overall with the pommel 16"h x 15"w. It is decorated with brass and is constructed of iron and wood. There is a repair break on one side, and is in as found condition. Please study photos and ask any questions.
