    Description

    A remarkable miniature solid bronze figure of two dog breeds - what appears to be a hound and a shepherd - in combat.  Although the subject matter may be offensive to some bear in mind that animalier art of this age often depicted such confrontations of animal life, and the detailed sculpting, quality and age of this solid bronze figure is quite impressive.  At first glance the one dog could be mistaken for a wolf, however the tail is not broomed like a brush or short and on closer inspection it has a molded collar.  At a solid 1 pound 3 ounces this was acquired in a group of 3 figures with one of those figures marked Rogers & Smith of New Haven, Connecticut, however this particular figure has no markings that I could find.  Measures 2 and 3/4 inches tall x 5 inches long with rich dark patina and minor wear but no breaks, damage,  or repairs.  One must appreciate the attention to detail of even the wild expression in the eyes of the shepherd type breed dog and the posture of how the hound is seizing the other's leg in it's jaws.  As a long time collector I have never seen anything similar to this and the quality is a piece of nostalgic beauty in art.
