    PLEASE
    READ the MEASUREMENTS
    – Photos do not show actual size!
Have a tape measure handy…I never shop for online jewelry without one! Thank You!
    DESIGNER/COMPANY/LOCATION:
    Unknown/Unsigned
    METAL:
Sterling Silver Foil & unknown Metal
    DETAILS:
    ~ Late 1800s/Early 1900s Mourning Bangle Bracelet
~ Sterling Foiled Floral & Foliate Design all the way around
~ Black Enamel inside & out which covers a very heavy, unknown metal (58 grams!).
~ Photos 6-9 were shot in rotating order
~ Back in the day, most catalogs instructed buyers to send in their wrist measurements as the bracelets were made to order. This piece is fits a larger wrist (see below) so the female in mourning was most likely an older matronly woman. However, these days bangles may be worn on the upper arm or left to dangle below the wrist, so keep this in mind when viewing the measurements.
~ Photos 10-12 (for reference only) are pages from late 1800s/early 1900s catalogs that depict some Mourning Bracelets. Notice in photo #10, 2
    nd
    row, 3
    rd
piece that it says “Black enameled all over,” which is like the one offered here. The last bangle in #11 is black enameled white metal. All the bracelets in photo 12 are 14k gold and the black enamel mourning pieces are on the bottom row.
~ Mourning lasted 2.5-3 years! During Stages 1 & 2, most pieces were constructed of one or more of the following materials: Jet (fossilized black wood from ancient tree variety), Whitby Jet (fossilized coal), French Jet (black glass), Bog Oak, Gutta Percha (resin and petroleum), Vulcanite (hardened black rubber), Black Onyx Gemstone, Human Hair (often woven or curled), &
    Black Enamel over Metal
. In Stage 3 Mourning, the last 6 months, one could wear shades of purple and other types of jewelry, including Coral, and could make public appearances. (So glad that business is over!)
    ~
    BEFORE YOU BUY
    :
    Please
measure the widest part of your hand
as this will not fit everyone. Fold thumb into hand to make a fist and measure the widest part including your thumb knuckle – this is what the bracelet has to slip over to get onto the wrist. If your measurement is more than 8.25” it will not slip over.
    CONDITION:
    Very nice
    Antique condition
considering it’s over a hundred-years-old! Minor surface wear is present as well as a few very small dings noticeable on close inspection. The Silver foil is in great shape overall. Please view all photos to judge for yourself.
