SACRED HIMALAYAN FOSSIL
I have trekked from Pokhara up to the holy Hindu shrine with its eternal flame at Muktinath twice, once in 1979, & again in 1982, & this fossil is from there. It is from the time before the Himalayas were formed, before the land masses crashed into one another out of the ocean to form the worlds highest mountains. It was a marvelous trek, up the Kali Gandaki river, & one would see Saddhus & other devotees on pilgrimage, on their way to the shrine at 14,000ft. Now unfortunately, a road is being built so this tradition will soon be gone. These many millions of years old fossils, ammonites, are considered sacred representations of Vishnu & are thought by Nepali Hindus to be some of the most sacred objects on earth. In Nepal they are often placed on shrines & are treated with great reverence, & are also used to cure rheumatism & athritis.. It measures approximately 4" x 2 1/2" wide x 2 1/2" thick.
